DANCE FOR PARKINSON’S AUSTRALIA (DPA) provides high quality services to people living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), their partners, carers, friends, and the broader community. Established in Australia in 2013, our goal is to provide opportunities to improve quality of life and encourage arts, health and well-being in creative ageing. Our primary activities focus on providing accessible dance classes for the Parkinson’s community and broader communities of seniors. We also provide training and professional development and are leaders in creative ageing best practice.WHAT IS ELEVATE?
ELEVATE is an opportunity to renew and refresh skills, to reconnect with our communities and to share our dance knowledge. The program includes a diverse range of practical and information sharing sessions, involving significant practitioners and arts leaders from the ACT, the nation and beyond. These include: Dr Erica Rose Jeffrey (Director, DPA), David Leventhal (Director, Dance for PD, New York), ZEST: Dance for Wellbeing, ACT, Liz Lea (Director of Liz Lea Creates, The Stellar Company and the BOLD Festival), Gail Hewton (RIPE Dance/Gold Moves Australia), Christopher Carroll (Actor, ACT), Robyn Lewis (Churchill Fellow & Yoga Practitioner, ACT), Dr Allyson Flynn (University of Canberra) and Board Members of Dance for Parkinson’s Australia (Natasha Cesco, Jess Conneely, Gordon Coss, Paige Gordon, Philip Piggin and Gabi Stanger).
WHERE?
The PD will take place at Gorman Arts Centre, Ainslie Ave, Braddon, a 5-minute walk to Canberra CBD. It was built in 1924 as a hostel for public servants, and now this central heritage-listed facility holds a rich and layered history where people have lived, worked, performed and explored their creativity.
COST?
Member of DPD/Ausdance: $350 Non-Members: $375 (Early Bird Deal up to 31/1/25)
Member of DPD/Ausdance: $375; Non-Members: $400 (Late Bird Deal up to 1/3/25)
PRE-REQUISITE?
DPA Introductory Training. Please provide details of the course completed when you register.
ACCOMODATION?
A deal has been negotiated with the nearby MERCURE HOTEL, and a code to access this discount will be provided on your registration for the PD. The hotel, located on Limestone Ave, Braddon, is a 10-minute drive from the airport and 5-minute walk from Gorman Arts Centre.

Dance for Parkinson’s Australia – BACKGROUND: For people living with Parkinson’s disease, rigorous dance classes led by trained professional teaching artists are becoming internationally acknowledged as an important, beneficial, movement-based therapeutic intervention that is supported by published research. DPA is an affiliate of the internationally recognised Dance for PD program, which originated in New York at the Mark Morris Dance Centre in 2001.
